If you go shopping later at night, you would have seen the hard working nightfillers in every supermarket packing the shelves, have you ever wondered what their story is, or are you one of the people who just ignore, stare or snob them as you walk past wondering why they can't go and get a "real" job?
I have a background in Hotel Management, but i'm also the mother of two pre-school aged children.
For me to return to work during the day in a "real" job, I would have to pay over $500 per week in childcare fees, not to mention miss out on valuable time lost with my children during their early years.
Most people who pack shelves have a professional background and are either doing it for the same reasons as myself, or have it as a second job to cover additional household expenses, mortgage, etc.
Next time you're shopping and see these people working, smile and be polite...they are only human, If they weren't filling the shelves, what would you be eating for dinner tonight?
say hello and make them feel appreciated, I am on the verge of taking on a second job myself, and shelf stacking is an appealing option, I certainly hope people don't frown on me if i do, I have 4 kid's, all in school, my wife stays at home for the kid's but the bills still mount up, My hat is off to any one who is in mine or your position and has to do shelf stacking to make ends meet, say hello to them and put a smile on their faces next time you see them.

Good on you guys for the comments above.
Anyone that looks down on anyone out there working to make ends meet I think are the ones with a problem and we all should feel sorry for them.
If it wasn't for he hard working people like shelf stackers we would have to spend alot more time shopping for groceries so thankyou to all the behind the scenes workers making all our lives easier.

Whether you work day or night, & whatever your occupation is it is always to the benefit of someone else. Think of the many jobs people do......many of them you wouldn't do. But we are human and we all have reason for why we work. The fact is we are out there working, often to make ends me or make our lives a little more comfortable & irrespective what occupation I don't think anyone should frown upon you. The ones I frown upon are those who sit on their backside and wait or order people to do things for them. Just think if we looked down on the gardo collecters - what a mess we'd be in. Thank god for the garbo's , the shelf stackers, plumbers that fix blocked toilets.etc I take my hat off to them & say THANKYOU.

you sound like you are embarrassed about you job .... you dont even have to talk to the public ... you should be a waitress and then see how you are treated and you get better wages . i should change jobs .

I've worked directly with the public in various hospitality positions, I know how hard it is... i'm not embarassed, you missed the point of the blog, it's about not wanting to be judged just because of the job I am doing at the moment.
Looking at me at work and then in my personal life is like night and day.
Dealing with people in hospitality is hard, especially here on the GC, visitors have a high expectation when they visit and I often found that they left their manners and patience at home.
I applaud you for working in the industry, it's not easy, but future career opportunities can take you anywhere.

are you happy with your life.... then you shouldnt give a toss of what you think others might think of you ( or judge you} because of your job or what car you drive or what ever.
i didnt mean to offend you but to tell you the truth ive never even thought to look down uopn supermarket workers or any workers for a matter of fact

I'm not unhappy with my life, but thanks for asking.
All I was doing was putting a point across from my perspective to open people's eyes to the reality that many people face with having to do a job they may not have thought of as "real" work.
You haven't offeneded me and i'm not here to start an arguement either. Thankyou for your reply and for not looking down on supermarket workers.

Anyone working in a supermarket is automatically labelled "second rate employee", "not good enough to get a REAL job". It's also not helped by slogans such as "the customer is always right", etc etc. This seems to give the green light for customers to be arrogant and make shop assistants feel like they should be worshipping the ground they walk on, not ALL but quite a lot. Reality check....everyone has to EAT!

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, there are always people who are going to look down on others. I use to work behind a bar, and yes people use to treat me like I wasn’t worth the conversation. But without me, they wouldn’t have got a drink. Welcome to the real world. It’s full of snobs. It happens in all industries, weather you’re a receptionist, bank teller, bar worker etc, some people are just rude. But in saying that, there are 2 sides to every story, and I truly believe in most cases, you get treated as well as you treat others. I try to make a point of always using manners and being polite, and yet sometimes the staff member you’re dealing with will still be rude and unhelpful. What can you do??

I absolutely know how you feel. I work in a small suburban restaraunt, and I am treated like dirt all the time by customers, when all I'm trying to do is pay my rent while I'm at uni. Comments like 'what do you know? You probably didn't even finish school' , and 'Have you thought about going to TAFE or something? You can't be a waitress forever' really offend me. People need to realise that alot of service staff are not in such jobs because they are idiots, but because they have Bond degrees to pay for. Additionally, that many waitpersons have double the IQ that you'd expect.
